About The Artist
Introduced to painting as a child, Selina has explored her visual passion through a variety of mediums and materials. Currently, her choice of technique combines traditional screen printing methods with abstracted subject matter inspired by organic and oceanic forms. The completed paintings are an expression of the artist’s interest in the unique west-coast environment and the fragile ecosystems that surround us.
Maintaining a diverse portfolio, Selina regularly works with watercolours and acrylics in addition to an assortment of drawing materials. Projects on the horizon include book illustrations and a new series of paintings.
As an active artist, Selina’s work is now part of several private collections and she has been exhibiting on Vancouver Island since 1999.
Artist Statement
Inspired by the west coast landscape, my work explores the qualities of various environments and ecosystems. I am also interested in the parallels between the laboratory and the studio.
I approach my work in a scientific manner, carefully examining, studying and observing my subject choices. Indulging in my somewhat obsessive tendencies towards collecting, categorizing and organizing, I look for unique ways to display my "specimens". Drawn to organic shapes and forms, I enjoy imagery and processes that encourage a raw, honest quality of line. Often, I use a variety of media to work into the piece, excited by the depth and edge that can be achieved through mixed materials. I am fascinated by the amazing capacity life has to continually evolve, adapt and survive. My subject matter, therefore, often reflects this appreciation and intrigue.
